FOURTEEN

His hands looked ghostly in the reflected glow from the flashlight. Lacey had insisted he find the small package of blue latex gloves she kept in her pack, and cautioned him again about touching anything in the hogan that might be evidence. He snorted to himself as he approached the squat structure. If he’d had his way, he wouldn’t get close enough to touch anything at all. But Lacey needed help, so his reservations about re-experiencing Nina’s captivity had to be set aside.

The door of the hogan was still unlatched—probably would never latch again after he’d kicked it open—and he ducked beneath the crime tape and pushed the door aside. He swept the flashlight over the contents. Bed, table, woodstove. Too bad he couldn’t pull the stove out and take it to Lacey. It would put out more heat than a simple fire.

Too bad he couldn’t bring her in here. But that was more of a transgression than he was willing to make.

He trained the light on the bed. All the bed covers—sheets, blanket—had been bundled into evidence bags and carted off by the FBI. The thin mattress remained, but that, too, could yield DNA. He dismissed any thoughts of taking it for Lacey’s comfort. The ground would have to do.

He walked to the table. Everything there had a fine black coating of fingerprint dust on it. There was an oil lamp—no oil in the reservoir—some dirty dishes, silverware, an empty beer bottle. That was when Sam noticed a good-sized cooler against the wall behind the table, and next to that an old trunk.

He checked the cooler first. No ice—it had all melted—and a handful of full beer bottles floated in the water. No help there. After the hand trembling, Sam had insisted on dividing the last sandwich they had between Lacey and Ben, while he made do with an energy bar. They still had a couple bottles of water, but the water in this cooler might come in handy. He lowered the lid on the cooler and went to the trunk.

It was a jumble; no folding anything here. He pulled out a wrinkled checked shirt, a bandana, and found two more thin blankets at the bottom. He scooped those up.

What else?

Peering about the hogan, he noticed a Navajo rug rolled up against one wall. He unrolled a little of it to check its condition: worn, stained, but serviceable. He dragged it over to the door and tossed it outside, followed by the blankets.

Scanning the room one last time, he felt the torment of Nina’s ordeal pressing against his consciousness. The panic, the pain, the helplessness. He made a solemn promise to her that they would find her body—and her killer. Then he lit a smudge stick and purified the hogan. When he felt he’d done all he could, he went outside.

He glanced over at their “camp” and saw Ben still sitting beside Lacey. The fire still glowed, affording a little light and probably less heat. He turned to check around the outside of the hogan.
